We’ve made no secret of our love for Hortlax Cobra, the magnificently unpredictable side project of Peter Bjorn and John member John Eriksson. With an array of musical accomplices and an incredibly rich palette of influences, every new record manages to surprise and delight.
“The great thing about having an alter ego,” Eriksson explains, “is that you can do anything that you can’t do when you are yourself. Most people are blinded by themselves. I try to get blinded by my alter ego.”
HC’s newest double single will be released on INGRID (the label PB&J run together with fellow Swede Lykke Li) this Friday, April 7. No shock, the two songs come from distinctly different aesthetic perspectives. “Bus Stop” takes an infectious 60s groove (it could almost be The Monkees) and funks it up, adding exuberant, robot-effect vocals. It only needs a snazzy remix to become a spring 2017 dancefloor sensation. The flipside, “Gimme the Highlights,” follows an HC tradition of superlative special guest collaborators. In this case it’s French born Swede singer Sibille Attar – who gives an ethereal vocal performance over an alluring slice of 80s referencing (Madonna, Pet Shop Boys) disco-pop.
BlackBook has the honor of premiering both tracks. A new Hortlax Cobra album, a collection of four double singles, will be out May 12 on INGRID.
