– The Format’s Sam Means will be releasing his debut solo album 10 Songs on January 22nd, 2016 via Hello Records and is thrilled to be sharing the first song from the collection “We’re Alone” via an exclusive premiere with Stereogum today. 10 Songs was recorded in LA with producer and musician Steven McDonald (Redd Kross), who produced The Format’s last studio album 2006’s Dog Problems. Means was also joined in the studio by another Dog Problems collaborator, Jellyfish’s Roger Joseph Manning Jr.
The news of 10 Songs comes nearly eight years after The Format announced they would be going on an indefinite hiatus. While the other half of The Format – Nate Ruess – went on to form Grammy Award-winning act fun. and just this year release his debut solo album, Means chose a different path. He started a family and created one of the most successful Merch Companies around today, Hello Merch – whose roster boasts the likes of Chelsea Wolfe, Death Grips, Patty Griffin and Neon Indian among a slew of others as well as several labels including Sargent House and non-profit organizations like The Ally Coalition.
Means didn’t stop making music, however, and continued on his own terms. His first project was scoring the indie film The Sinking of Santa Isabel which resulted in a surprise success story with the song “Yeah Yeah” that ultimately got placed in over two dozen television commercials worldwide and even hit the #1 slot on iTunes in the Netherlands where the song has since been certified Gold.
All the while Means fully intended to record a solo album, but it wasn’t until last year that he got serious and rented a studio in downtown Phoenix. He amassed 30 songs and with the help of former Format bandmates bassist Don Raymond Jr., guitarist Marko Buzard and drummer John O’Reilly Jr. – among a few other trusted friends and musicians – he whittled those down to 10 that he would bring to LA with him to record with McDonald.
10 Songs is an album that will most certainly appeal to fans of The Format’s distinctive quirky indie-pop while introducing a much more mature Means, who has come a long way since his childhood days. Means brings a perspective that can only come from experiencing fatherhood, spending time away from the road, and from starting and running your own business.
