New Video: Sarah Jaffe, ‘Mannequin Woman’

Did you ever notice that, like, people are just made out of energy? *Looks at hands for an hour* Just, like, particles, and atoms and we’re all floating around here in space, connected? And that music is just colors and vibrations that you can hear in your dome? That’s the vibe we’re getting from Sarah Jaffe‘s hypnotic new video for “Mannequin Woman,” taken from her recent The Body Wins.

Watch Sarah Jaffe’s “Mannequin Woman” video after the jump.

The track’s seemingly minimal video, directed by Richard Krause with Toby Halbrooks and David Lowery, finds the soulful Texas singer winning the world’s most epic staring contest; the only thing harder to look away from than her preternaturally glowing ice-blue eyes here are the vapor trails of ghost magic evaporating off her skin like fog on a creepy rainbow lake at dawn.

Sarah herself is especially appealing — she’s readily adopted Robyn‘s slick Nordic look and cross-pollinated it with Jessie Ware‘s rich, penetrating vocals and Fiona Apple‘s introspective moodiness. “Mannequin Woman” is a haunting, Feist-conjuring, jazz-club indie pop that makes you want to explode into a thousand molecules and trail off into the void. That, or  spending the rest of the day chilling in a hip cafe drinking way too much coffee. Either one really — it’s all part of the same universal DNA, man.

Five of the Best Songs by Bronze Radio Return Yet

December 17 , 2012

Bronze Radio Return is an American indie folk /roots revival band that is based out of Hartford, Connecticut, that has created some seriously amazing music together, with a sound that is completely original and enjoyable. The band is comprised of Chris Henderson, Patrick Fetkowitz, Robert Tanen, Matthew Warner, Robert Griffith, and Craig Struble, and together they have compiled a strong song collection that appeals to music fans of varying genres.

I stumbled upon Bronze Radio Return by happy accident. Someone took it upon themselves to share a song by Bronze Radio Return with me on Spotify. I listened and I immediately loved their sound, and they have been looping on my mp3 player ever since. Here is a look at five of the band’s best songs yet, and see why they are so deserving of all the positive attention they can muster.

Worth Wondering”

The first song I ever heard by Bronze Radio Return was “Worth Wondering.” The band’s warm folk / indie roots revival sound immediately caught my attention. I simply cannot listen to this song without tapping my foot along to the beat, and feeling a positive shift in my mood. “Worth Wondering” is a simply beautiful song that is deserving of high praise and lots of radio play.

Hortlax Cobra – “1984”

What do you get when you mix one-third of Swedish electro-pop group Peter Bjorn and John with the hard rock stylings of Van Halen? 1984, a new experimental record from John Eriksson — who goes by the stage name Hortlax Cobra — that pays homage to Van Halen’s sixth studio album bearing the same title. Inspired by the vintage LP as a child, Eriksson’s version isn’t quite the sound Eddie and crew were going for but it’s still enchanting nonetheless. Stream the full album below, then download it on December 12.

Last 10 with Sarah Jaffe!

February 13 , 2013

I’ve started writing this article about 7 times. Every time typing a few words, then… delete delete delete delete.  I just don’t know where to begin or what to say about this amazing artist. There’s a reason why 27-year-old indie-folk singer-songwriter from Denton, Texas, Sarah Jaffe titled one of her 4 released EP and LP albums “The Way Sound Leaves a Room”. Simply put, that line encompasses her entire essence… her sound as a whole. It honestly feels as though she is playing in the room next to you – raw, original, emotive, amazing.

Her latest album, The Body Wins, Produced by John Congleton (St. Vincent, Explosions in the Sky, Wye Oak) breaks the familiarity of Jaffe’s sound, but does not stray too far from it. With a slightly edgier style, Jaffe explores electronic elements, synths, distorted beats and strings to create another brilliant album.   You can check out more of Sarah Jaffe‘s music here, but first, why don’t you listen to the Last 10 songs Sarah did!

Watch Hellogoodbye’s ‘Finding Something To Do’ Tour Video

January 30 , 2013

It’s been a crazy ride for So. Cal power-pop act Hellogoodbye (hence Forrest Kline’s tired tee), who first popped up in the early aughts with a unique brand of jokey, playfully Auto-Tuned jams and a name dedicated to a quote by Screech from “Saved by the Bell.” After touring with an impressive cavalcade of like-minded acts (The FormatThe All-American RejectsNew Found GlorySaves The Day, to name a few), the Warped Tour vets signed with Drive-Thru Records and released their nerd-core debut, Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!, featuring the adorkable anthem “Here In Your Arms.” Then things got a little less fun — between a slew of lineup changes, Hellogoodbye parted ways with Drive-Thru Records in 2010 and went on to self-release their sophomore album Would It Kill You? It’s now been three years since Hellogoodbye put out a record, but the group is back with a new label, a re-release of 2010′s Would It Kill You? (featuring several bonus tracks), and a brand-new album coming out in April. (I’m doing a little victory dance over here in my chair. Don’t mind me. Actually, just ignore me.)

To celebrate their partnership with Old Friends Records, Hellogoodbye recently decided to take a camera crew with them on a mini-tour, the end result being a funtimes tour video for their classic track, “Finding Something To Do.”

Watch Hellogoodbye’s “Finding Something To Do” video after the jump.

In the video below, shot at their NYC holiday show this past November, Hellogoodbye demonstrates exactly what makes them so special (in case you missed the show, or in case you had no idea what makes them so special): the fast-paced, bouncy energy that they bring to the stage… or just your speakers. The video combines scenes of Hellogoodbye in concert with shots of them piecing together myriad instruments and hanging out backstage, all giant smiles, “Napoleon Dynamite”-esque baseball hats, and Rivers Cuomo glasses. Welcome back, Hellogoodbye; if you need me, I’ll be having a staring contest with this video.
