CLOUD CULT, ‘YOU’RE THE ONLY THING IN YOUR WAY’ – VIDEO PREMIERE

April 10 , 2013

When Minneapolis chamber-pop outfit Cloud Cult hooked up with local public television show ‘MN Original’ to film an acoustic version of ‘You’re the Only Thing In Your Way,’ the lead track from their recently released ninth album, ‘Love,’ they had an unusual location in mind: an antique shop. So they packed up their gear and headed to Architectural Antiques, a store in Northeast Minneapolis, to perform the tune among the stained glass windows, candelabras and other aged artifacts while bathed in the warm glow of numerous vintage chandeliers.

“This was an incredibly magical setting and magical video team to work with,” frontman Craig Minowa tells Diffuer.fm of the video, which captures their beautifully tender and restrained performance. “It’s an intensely personal song for all of us in the band, and the video team really captured that feeling in a way that I think is rare in live video these days.”

Cloud Cult are supporting ‘Love’ with a U.S. tour that will include two hometown record-release concerts (April 27-28) at legendary downtown Minneapolis club First Avenue and keep the band on the road through a May 12 gig in San Diego. Check out their full itinerary here.

Cloud Cult, ’1x1x1′ — Video Premiere

cloud cult

Experimental chamber pop mainstays Cloud Cult are celebrating the release of their latest studio album, simply titled Love, with the release of this video for “1x1x1.”

The big band, hailing from the Midwest, has 15 years and nine full-length studio albums to their credit — no small feat in the rock world, especially considering their history of eschewing labels in favor of self-publishing their music.

“This video of ’1x1x1′ was shot by Newfangled Studios and it is one of our favorite Cloud Cult music videos we’ve ever had done. They did a great job of summing up what the whole intention of what this band is about,” Singer Craig Minowa tells Spinner.

“We were also blessed with the opportunity to shoot it at Driftless Books, which is a massive historic warehouse in Wisconsin full of books, old vinyl, puppets and the nicest people on the planet … ’1x1x1′ is a follow-up to a song we had on our 2007 album, which was called ’2x2x2.’ This song is about peeling through all of the superficial layers of imagined self in order to find the true ‘you.’”

Watch the music video for Cloud Cult’s “1x1x1″ below. Love is available now on the band’s official website.

Hear Os Mutantes’ New, Anguished ‘Fool Metal Jack’

April 2 , 2013

A first listen from the Brazilian psych legends’ forthcoming full-length of the same name, due April 30 via Krian Music Group

The title track to Os Mutantes’ forthcoming album, Fool Metal Jack, starts with an ending. ”Yeah, I’m gonna die / Shot in the gut / My blood is everywhere,” frontman Sérgio Dias croaks over a lurching bass line and stumbling percussion. “My two legs are gone / I don’t feel a thing / I won’t see my daddy no more.”

Dias, leader of the Brazilian psych-rock icons, says he was inspired to write the song — which captures a young, naïve soldier’s final moments — after spotting a group of fresh-faced American soldiers boarding a plane at an airport.

“They were so, so, so fresh,” Dias recalls. “They’re not professional soldiers or anything like that. It gave me a feeling of sorrow… I understand the concept of, ‘Okay, we’re defending the country,’ but I don’t know, sometimes you have to question. What I did in the lyrics was I put myself in their place.” The Brazilian native-turned-U.S. resident insists that the words poured out of him in his South American studio. ”I wrote the lyrics in a passion, in half an hour,” he says.

Brazilian psychedelic rockers Os Mutantes have been around since 1966 and are cemented as cultural behemoths. After line-up changes, break ups, and periods of silence, Os Mutantes are back with their ninth album titled Fool Metal Jack, written almost entirely in English. “Ganjaman” seems to be emblematic of the album, which is to say that it’s like what psychedelic rock would sound like if it had lounged on Brazilian beaches for like 40 years. Marvel Interview Owl City

MARVEL

The Marvel Life: Owl City

March 14 , 2013

owl city M

In the midst of a stadium tour with Maroon 5 and Neon Trees, Adam Young, multi-instrumentalist and the brains behind the band Owl City, took time out to talk with Marvel.

A big fan of the Hulk, Young spoke with us about his recently released album “Midsummer Station,” the process behind creating the song “When Can I See You Again?” for the Disney film “Wreck-It Ralph” and much more.

Marvel.com: To begin, how did fans react to your new record?

Adam Young: So far so good. I think at first they were a little bit unsure of it because it’s a little more literal than what I usually write lyrically. I think that comes from taking 50% of what makes one person himself and pouring 100% of himself into something and dividing that up into two or three different people writing the lyrics. The song has to mean a lot to three people versus just one, so things are a little bit less weird lyrically on this new record, and that was intentional. I think some of the fans were a little bit miffed by that, but that’s part of it. I think on top of figuring out how to work with other people, I really got a lot of respect for the power of a simple melody.

It’s kind of mindless, but just the power of that melody or the simplicity of something can really connect, really move people. That became this lyrical snowball thing; I just loved chasing the idea. You know, how do you write a song about having a good time that hasn’t been done a million times already, and the way that you’re so excited about it? You feel like you’re creating something new. That’s what it’s all about.

Adam Young: Really good. We had to cancel three or four shows because of my voice, but it’s been so cool for me. I feel really lucky to be able to be out here on the road with Neon Trees and Maroon 5. I feel like I get backstage passes to watch these two amazing bands every night, and all I have to do is play a few of my own songs. I feel like I should be some other guy instead of me. So, yeah, I’m super humbled and they’re great guys to be around and watch play. The best of the best. It’s really cool for me.
